Gematria

Gematria is a Jewish system, emerging in the Second Temple period (3rd century BCE onward), of assigning numerical values to Hebrew letters and words; used in rabbinic literature and Kabbalistic texts such as the Zohar as a method of textual interpretation, with the number 18 (chai, "life") considered especially auspicious.
