Source Tradition
June has one of the richest birthstone histories. Pearl appears in the 1st century BCE Hindu text the Atharvaveda as a gem of the Moon and in ancient Roman wedding customs. Alexandrite—discovered in Russia's Ural Mountains in 1830 and named for Tsar Alexander II—was added to the modern list in 1952 by the Jewelry Industry Council of America. Moonstone, long associated with lunar deities across cultures, was recognized as a third June option in the 2002 AGTA update. The modern list's expansion reflects commercial availability and consumer choice rather than replacement.
