Source Tradition

This is one of the most significant divergences between traditional and modern lists. Bloodstone (heliotrope)—a dark green jasper with red iron oxide spots—was March's birthstone from antiquity through the 19th century. Tiffany & Co.'s 1870 birthstone poem named bloodstone for March. The 1912 Jewelers of America list replaced it with aquamarine, a transparent blue beryl, likely for commercial reasons—transparent gems were preferred for modern jewelry. Bloodstone remains a recognized alternate, preserving the ancient connection. In Exodus 28, the jasper (yashpheh) appears as the last stone of Aaron's breastplate.
