Source Tradition

Topaz appears in Exodus 28 as 'pitdah,' the second stone of Aaron's breastplate. Ancient Egyptians associated golden topaz with Ra the Sun god; the Hindu Navaratna places yellow topaz (pushparaga) under Jupiter. Citrine—a golden variety of quartz—was added as a modern alternate in 1952, providing a more affordable option with similar solar associations. The name 'topaz' derives from Topazios, an island in the Red Sea (anciently a source of peridot, not modern topaz). Both stones share Jupiter/Sun symbolism across traditions.
