Variety of Quartz

Milky quartz is the most common variety of quartz, colored white to translucent by microscopic fluid inclusions (tiny pockets of water and gas) trapped during crystal growth. The inclusions scatter light internally, creating the milky appearance through the same Tyndall scattering mechanism that makes clouds white. The fluid inclusions form when growing quartz traps small pockets of the hydrothermal solution from which it is crystallizing.

Milky quartz is abundant because the conditions that produce perfectly clear quartz (slow, undisturbed growth from very pure solutions) are the exception rather than the rule. Most quartz veins worldwide consist primarily of milky quartz, and it is a common gangue mineral in ore deposits of all types.

Milky quartz is the most abundant variety of quartz on earth, and the confusion arises when sellers relabel it as snow quartz, white jade, or other names that imply something rarer. At Mohs 7 with specific gravity 2. 65, no cleavage, and conchoidal fracture, it is standard macrocrystalline quartz made translucent to opaque by microscopic fluid inclusions and internal fractures that scatter light.

White jade is nephrite or jadeite, much tougher and denser. White calcite is far softer and effervesces in acid. White agate is microcrystalline and shows a waxy rather than vitreous fracture surface. If a white stone scratches glass easily, has no cleavage, and feels light, it is very likely milky quartz. The mineral is common and affordable, and renaming it to charge a premium is a standard retail game.
