Care & Cleansing
How to keep Prophecy Stone in good condition
Water Safe?
Keep dry
This stone should stay out of water. Water can dull the surface, destabilize the specimen, or damage the stone over time.
Sunlight Safe?
Sunlight safe
Tolerates daylight; safe to charge or display in the sun.
Authenticity
What to check
Natural Prophecy Stone should usually feel cooler than plastic or resin on first touch and warm more slowly in the hand.
Can Prophecy Stone Go in Water?
Brief Rinse Only.
Prophecy stone is a pseudomorph, typically limonite (iron oxyhydroxide, FeO(OH)) replacing marcasite or pyrite. Mohs hardness is 4 to 5.5. The surface is iron-based and water accelerates rust formation. A very brief rinse of 10 to 15 seconds is tolerable if dried immediately. Do not soak. The porous, pseudomorphic structure absorbs water readily.
Salt water: never. Salt accelerates iron oxidation.
Gem elixirs: never. Iron minerals leach into water.
Cleansing Methods
Smoke: Sage or palo santo, 30 to 60 seconds. Dry cleansing is ideal for iron-based minerals.
Moonlight: Overnight on a soft, non-porous surface. Place on a tray rather than fabric, as iron oxide can stain cloth.
Selenite plate: Rest on selenite for 4 to 6 hours.
Sound: Singing bowl near the stone, 2 to 3 minutes.
Storage and Handling
Store prophecy stone in a dry environment. Humidity causes ongoing oxidation (rust). The rough, organic surface texture is characteristic and should not be cleaned or polished. Store separately from lighter-colored stones, as iron oxide can transfer and stain. Handle with dry hands. Some practitioners store iron minerals with silica gel packets to control moisture.
Temperature
Natural Prophecy Stone should usually feel cooler than plastic or resin on first touch and warm more slowly in the hand.
Scratch logic
Use 5 on the Mohs scale as the check, not internet myths. A real specimen should behave in line with the hardness listed above.
Surface and luster
Look for a dull to earthy surface quality rather than a painted or plastic shine.
Weight and density
The listed specific gravity is 3.0-4.0. If a specimen feels unusually light for its size, it may deserve a second look.
