Sphalerite gets mistaken for resin, garnet, smoky quartz, and even treated glass because dark stones with bright flash fool the eye. What separates it is a combination of softness, extremely high luster, and unmistakable cleavage. Transparent gem material throws unusual fire, but it also chips more easily than harder gems. Crystal specimens often show resinous to adamantine surfaces and can shift from honey brown to nearly black depending on iron.

If a seller presents a highly dispersive stone as a durable jewelry gem without mentioning cleavage and modest hardness, that is incomplete information.
